Monitoring Migration Routes and Settlements

The service chain Monitoring Migration Routes and Settlements puts a focus on the monitoring of migration routes, settlements and population movements. This includes the observation of long range migration routes and of settlements along the routes.

All products offered by the Migration and Border Monitoring pilot services aim at improving (partially already) existing monitoring and surveillance services and to support situation awareness in border areas and in areas and/or along routes subject to migration and temporary settlement/urban extensions. The products provide a significant intelligence and decision support in order to help stakeholders involved in issues related to border control, migration and (temporary) settlements.

Users come from various domains, but mainly public, civil security and military stakeholders are addressed. The services can be offered worldwide; within GMOSAIC the focus is currently put on Eastern Europe and Central Africa.

 

Core products

Both the pilot services Monitoring Migration Routes and Settlements and Border Area Monitoring supply the following products:

 

Border Permeability Map showing the ease with which borders can be crossed

 

 

 

Extended Border Permeability Map which adds a trafficability map to the above

 

 

 

Change Detection Map showing changes between two points in time

 

 

 

Reference Map (basic), Reference Population Distribution Map and Reference Road Network Map providing background material for further analysis

Change Detection Map

The change detection product is composed of a base map derived from satellite orthoimages and geo-spatial information in support of emergency planning for evacuation and for intervention in critical institutions such as government buildings, embassies and consulates, medical facilities, transportation networks, hydrography networks and others, according to users' needs.

Change detection and change analysis is performed on satellite imagery acquired before, during and after the respective situation / event of interest. The analysis can help to identify areas where changes have occurred and can provide information about on-going activities on-site. Another field of application is the monitoring of migration and transportation routes.

 

Reference Map (basic), Reference Population Distribution Map and Reference Road Network Map

Within G-MOSAIC, reference and topographic mapping is geared towards the MGCP (Multinational Geospatial Co-Production Program) programme and will provide the users with any additional map products needed. It is also possible to update already available MGCP maps on the users’ side. The reference map is the basement of the geo-information, providing the most useful information for all applications. The reference maps can be provided at scales of 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 and are a key challenge for authorities and institutions in many regions of the world.

In addition to the ‘pure’ reference map (basic product), which is a topographic base map, two extensions to the reference map are offered:

  • Population Distribution Map
  • Road Network Map

 

The reference population distribution map can be used as a base or background map for further analysis. It can be delivered in raster or vector format and can be presented in 3-D. Using a top-down approach, the population distribution map is mainly based on the coarse Grid World Population database and a recent land cover map of the area of interest.

The reference road network provides information about the location and the accessibility of roads in a region. It can be used as a base or background map for further analysis. It is delivered in vector format.

 

 

Service coordination

This service is coordinated by Astrium GEO-Information Services with the efforts of further partners inside the G-MOSAIC consortium: e-geos, Eurosense, University of Rome/San Marco Project Research Centre, Space Research Centre Polish Academy of Sciences.
